Silky Restore
THE PRODUCT

The product

Silky Restore is the more restorative polishing stage for bringing shine back to suitable older gelcoat. It is not a wash, stain remover or final protective sealant.

Read the current product label for its application and surface precautions. A glossy photograph cannot establish whether a particular motorhome coating is suitable.

BEST FOR

Best for

Consider this path when cleaned older gelcoat remains dull or oxidised-looking and the motorhome maker’s care guidance permits polishing. Work one suitable section at a time.

The Silky Restore product page gives the product overview; this guide focuses on assessing an older motorhome’s clean but dull gelcoat before polishing.

CHECK FIRST

Check first

Identify gelcoat, paint, vinyl graphics, antifouling and previous repairs before selecting a polish. Keep any polishing process away from fittings and coatings not supported by the current label.

A thin, cracked, soft or flaking finish requires specialist assessment. Polishing cannot replace missing coating or repair damaged laminate.

1

Wash and diagnose the dullness

Clean the hull or topside by a method suitable for its material, then inspect it in even light. Distinguish a stain from uniform lost gloss and check for paint or repair areas.

Our related caravan guide explains the same decision between surface dirt and a finish that needs restoring.

2

Test a suitable gelcoat panel

Follow the current Silky Restore label on a small unobtrusive gelcoat area. Use only the applicator and method the pack permits, protecting adjacent graphics and fittings.

Judge the result before continuing. Do not polish through a thin or uncertain coating in pursuit of a mirror finish.

3

Refine or protect only if appropriate

Once the tested area is clean and improved, plan the remainder in manageable sections according to the current directions. If later refinement or protection is needed, choose a separate product for that stage.

If the dullness persists because the surface is damaged or painted rather than gelcoat, stop and seek the appropriate repair advice instead of repeatedly compounding.

Polishing helps only when the clean substrate and its condition make it appropriate.

Not if the gelcoat is already clean and the remaining issue is loss of gloss. Diagnose the finish before choosing a polishing stage.

Do not infer paint suitability from gelcoat guidance. Check the actual finish and current label.

Protect materials not covered by the product guidance and follow the motorhome maker’s care instructions.

It is a polishing stage. Evaluate separate protection only after preparation and according to the relevant product label.

No. Cracks, thin areas and failed repairs need an appropriate repair assessment.

Restore only a confirmed suitable gelcoat finish

Silky Restore belongs after washing when an older motorhome’s suitable gelcoat is clean but lacks gloss. Confirm the substrate, test a small area and follow the current label. The caravan gelcoat guide shows the related restoration decision in another setting.
