Cleaning, polishing and finishing dull caravan gelcoat

A caravan can be completely clean and still look flat. That is the point at which repeated washing stops being the answer. Dirt sits on the surface; a dull or weathered finish remains after the dirt has been removed. Recognising that difference helps place polishing in the correct stage of the job.

Silky Restore is the polishing compound in the Silky range for bringing shine back to older or previously compounded gelcoat. It comes after cleaning and before the finer finishing and sealing stages.

Confirm that the surface is clean first

Do not judge the condition of gelcoat through road film or storage grime. Wash the surface with the appropriate Silky cleaner and follow the directions on that product. Once it is clean and dry, inspect it in consistent light. A finish that remains dull can then be considered separately from any marks that still need cleaning or stain treatment.

This order avoids asking a polishing compound to do the job of a cleaner. It also makes it easier to see where the finish varies across a large panel.

Where Restore fits in the Silky system

Restore is intended for older or previously compounded gelcoat. The current guidance allows application by hand or with a rotary polishing machine and an appropriate compounding pad. Read the current container before use and select a method that suits both the surface and your experience.

Because Restore is a polishing compound, it should not be treated as the routine wash for every visit. Use it where the clean surface condition calls for restoration, then assess the result before moving to the next stage.

Work methodically across large panels

Caravan and motorhome sides create a large working area. Divide the surface into manageable sections and keep your lighting and inspection angle consistent. This helps you judge the finish rather than chasing reflections from one panel to another.

If using a machine, follow the product guidance and use an appropriate pad. If the material, coating or condition is uncertain, test a discreet area or seek advice before treating the full panel. Existing damage, failed coatings and local repairs may need specialist assessment rather than additional polishing.

Refine and protect after restoration

Restoration is not the end of the Silky sequence. Silky Fineshine is described for use after Restore to refine previously buffed and compounded plastic and paintwork to a high-gloss finish ready for sealing or waxing. Silky Superseal is the later polymer-sealing stage for suitable prepared finishes.

Move on only when the previous stage is complete and follow the instructions for each current container. For a broader overview, visit Choosing the right Silky product, browse all Silky products, or ask Silky Leisure about an uncertain surface.
